Being diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 12 was a pivotal moment in my life, one that began with a simple observation by my ballroom dance teacher in China. She noticed my uneven waist, prompting my family to seek medical advice at the best hospital in Beijing. The severity of my condition shocked us all when surgery was recommended, a prospect that meant having 12 screws in my back. Determined to explore alternative treatments, my family embarked on a journey across Asia, from Hong Kong to Singapore, in search of solutions.
At 13, we made a life-changing decision to move to the United States, drawn by its reputation for advanced medical options and alternative treatments for scoliosis. Here, I underwent Schroth treatment during high school, a method that involves specific exercises and posture training. Simultaneously, I wore a hard plastic brace designed to correct spinal curvature. Summers were dedicated to traveling to the scoliosis care center for further specialized treatment.
While my scoliosis continues to affect my daily life, the curvature has noticeably eased over the years. I've adopted a proactive approach by incorporating Pilates and strength exercises into my routine, focusing on building core and spinal muscles to support my back. This combination of treatments has been instrumental in managing my condition and improving my quality of life. Reflecting on my journey, I am inspired to share my experiences with the community, particularly with teenage patients facing similar challenges.
I want to offer guidance on what has worked for me, the pitfalls to avoid, and the importance of perseverance in managing scoliosis. By advocating for proactive treatment and sharing my story, I hope to support others on their journey to living well with scoliosis.
